How car tax works in 2026/27

For cars registered on or after 1 April 2017 you pay a one-off first-year rate based on CO2 emissions when the car is brand new, then a flat standard rate of £200 a year from the second year onwards. If you already own the car and are simply renewing, the first-year rate no longer applies and you pay the £200 standard rate. Cars with an original list price over £40,000 when new (over £50,000 for electric cars) pay an extra £440 a year on top for years two to six only, then drop back to £200. That list price is the manufacturer's published price including options, not what you actually paid. Almost all diesels registered since 2021 meet the RDE2 standard, so choose "Petrol or RDE2 diesel" unless you know yours does not.

Cars registered between March 2001 and March 2017 pay a fixed CO2 band rate (A to M) every year. Cars registered before March 2001 are taxed on engine size. Electric cars have paid VED since April 2025, and classic cars built before 1 January 1986 can apply for a historic exemption and pay nothing.

This calculator gives an estimate for the 2026/27 tax year (1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027) and is provided for general guidance only, not financial, tax or motoring advice. The figures shown are the standard 12-month rates paid in a single payment; paying every six months or monthly by Direct Debit costs a little more. Individual circumstances, exemptions and reliefs (for example disability exemptions, alternative-fuel discounts or historic status) can change what you actually pay. Always confirm the exact figure for your vehicle at gov.uk/vehicle-tax before making any decision. MotifyMe® accepts no liability for any loss arising from reliance on these estimates.
