Figures: UK average pump prices from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) weekly road fuel prices, dated 2 November 2026. These are statistical averages across supermarket, branded and independent forecourts, not the live price at any one station.

How have fuel prices changed?

Petrol is down 1.3p on the previous week, down 2.1p on four weeks ago and up 38.4p on a year ago. Diesel is down 0.6p on the previous week, down 0.9p on four weeks ago and up 56.0p on a year ago.

So far in 2026, petrol has peaked at 175.3p (week of 12 October 2026) and diesel at 200.0p (week of 12 October 2026). Since the start of the year petrol is up 37.9p and diesel up 54.4p. For context, the highest weekly averages in the DESNZ data since 2018 were 191.6p for petrol (week of 4 July 2022) and 200.0p for diesel (week of 12 October 2026).

How is the price of a litre made up?

Tax makes up about 47% of the petrol price and 43% of the diesel price. Each litre carries 52.95p of fuel duty, and VAT at 20% is then charged on the whole price. The rest covers the wholesale cost of the fuel, delivery and the retailer's margin.

Where is fuel cheapest today?

On 5 November 2026, the cheapest petrol among the 16 UK cities we track was in Sheffield at 162.9p a litre on average, and the dearest was Leicester at 168.8p. For diesel, Wolverhampton was cheapest at 189.4p and Leicester dearest at 198.3p. These come from live retailer prices, refreshed every morning. Prices vary far more than most drivers realise, often by 10p a litre or more between stations only a short drive apart. Supermarkets are the dependable value: they run only around one in six of the UK's roughly 8,300 forecourts but sell nearly half of all fuel, and typically undercut the branded stations by 5-10p a litre, according to the UK Petroleum Industry Association (UKPIA).

Methodology and sources

Headline averages are the UK weekly average pump prices published by DESNZ, compiled from the Competition and Markets Authority's road fuel price scheme, and are read from the official GOV.UK release every morning. DESNZ publishes a new figure weekly, usually on a Monday. Tax figures use the duty rate and VAT rate in that release. Forecourt counts and the supermarket sales share are from UKPIA. City prices are from live retailer prices, as described on the dataset page. Tank-fill costs assume a 55-litre tank.
