The Audi A3 is a premium compact family car that has been sold in the UK since 1996, competing with the BMW 1 Series and Mercedes A-Class. The Mk1 (1996 to 2003) was a 3-door only hatchback, while the Mk2 (2003 to 2012) introduced the Sportback 5-door and a cabriolet. The Mk3 (2012 to 2020) added a saloon body style alongside the hatchback, plus a plug-in hybrid e-tron version. The current Mk4, launched in 2020, continues as a Sportback hatchback and saloon with mild-hybrid petrol, diesel and PHEV options. Throughout its life the A3 has been offered with front-wheel drive or quattro all-wheel drive, manual or S tronic automatic gearboxes, and sits above the A1 but below the A4 in Audi's UK range. Performance S3 and RS3 variants have also been sold alongside the standard line-up.
