Edinburgh Clean Air Zone
Edinburgh's Low Emission Zone bans non-compliant vehicles from the city centre rather than charging them. Enforcement began on 1 June 2024, and driving a non-compliant car into the zone brings a £60 penalty that rises with repeat breaches.

What counts as compliant
The emission standards are the same across UK clean air and low emission zones. A petrol car generally needs to meet Euro 4 (most registered from 2006), and a diesel car needs Euro 6 (most registered from September 2015). Fully electric cars are always exempt. It comes down to the exact emission standard, not just the age, which is why it pays to check the reg rather than guess.
The Edinburgh zone
The city-centre zone within, but not including, the boundary roads around the centre. Enforced from 1 June 2024. It is run by City of Edinburgh Council.
