How to check a used car's MOT and tax before you buy
2 Jul 2026
Buying a used car in the UK? Before you so much as message the seller, the number plate alone tells you most of what you need to know. It takes about thirty seconds, it is completely free, and it can save you from an expensive mistake.
Here is exactly what to check, and in what order.
1. Start with the MOT history
Every car over three years old needs an MOT, and the full test history is public. Enter the registration and you can see every pass, every fail and every advisory going back years. What you are really looking for is the story between the lines: the same advisory flagged year after year, like a slow oil leak or a corroding brake pipe, tells you something the seller might not. A sudden jump in mileage, or a gap where the car was clearly off the road, is worth a question too.
2. Check the tax status
Next, confirm whether the car is taxed and when it is due. A car being sold untaxed is not automatically a red flag, but it is a prompt to ask why. And remember road tax no longer transfers with the car, so you will need to tax it yourself before you drive away.
3. Work out what it is actually worth
Sellers price on hope. You should price on evidence. A quick valuation based on the make, model, age and mileage gives you a realistic figure to anchor your negotiation, so you are not talked into paying showroom money for a car with a tired clutch. If the asking price sits well above the going rate, you now have the numbers to say so.
With MotifyMe® you can do all three in one place: enter the reg, see the MOT and tax data, and get a free valuation, with no card details needed.
4. Then, and only then, think about how you will pay
Once you know the car is sound and the price is fair, you can decide how to fund it. If you would rather spread the cost than pay in one go, MotifyMe® can introduce you to car finance options. To be clear about how that works: MotifyMe® Ltd is an Introducer Appointed Representative of Presto Finance Ltd, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. We make the introduction; any finance is arranged by Presto, and your eligibility and rate depend on your circumstances and the lender’s decision. Finance is subject to status and affordability.
The thirty-second habit worth keeping
Whether you are buying, selling, or just curious what the car on your driveway is worth this month, the same quick check applies. Know the history, know the value, and you are always negotiating from a position of strength.
